I am a maintenance worker too but at a "bigger" German firm. Stay unemployed for more than 3 months? Good luck getting hired with that big ass hole in your resume. I work for a large construction firm in their road construction division as an equipment operator.

May through November I work 16 hour days. A majority of my time is spent going up and down half kilometer stretches of gravel we're preparing for the asphalt crew to pave. I'm usually assigned to drum rollers and occasionally a tractor towing wobbly packers. We have pretty nice machines, most are closed cab with AC and radios.

December through April we don't work, what with the frozen ground and snow. I get that sweet employment insurance government gibs, making as much as I did working as a manager of a sporting goods retail warehouse.

The need for repairs and improvement of existing dirt roads means we'll always have work. Automation will never take my job, it technically could, but won't.

I'm a software developer for a consulting company.
Got the job right after I turned 17, had my one-year anniversary at the company last August. Feels pretty good.

Interesting concept, for sure. That would by an insanely expensive truck though, with significant maintenance and operating costs as well. No small municipality would be able to afford or justify the cost.

Really has nothing to do with my job though. First we don't work inside cities. We work major highways and smaller range roads. Second we don't have any part in asphalt or patch work. Our crew does base work, the prepping of dirt and the overlay of gravel that pavement sits on.

Like I said, technically possible automation creeps in, but not feasible in reality.
