Because I am trans and I understand what that experience is like, it is my personal belief that you can't make someone trans anymore than I could make you a girl, or make you gay or whatever else.
The situation you describe isn't someone being made trans, it's someone being abused by a nutter. While it is abhorrent, I really don't think it happens much at all. Like I said, I think anyone who is willing to transition based on the opinions of online strangers was already on that path to begin with.
There are plenty of people who cross-dress as a fetish and despite being exposed to trans stuff do not end up trans, for example.
And again, I don't think equating being trans with fetishistic crossdressing is really very apt anyway.

Different guy here but haven't twin studies demonstrated that being trans is most likely not entirely genetic? If there's an environmental or social element to it then you could say that that element 'turned' someone trans.

For sure, that's actually my understanding of it. I think it's constructed from many factors, biological and social and cognitive and so on. I just don't see that as the same thing as being 'turned' anything because it implies a few things
it implies social factors amount to 'this person told me to do X', which is reductive
it implies that there is an element of choice or control in constructs, rather than being deterministic
it implies that one aspect can undermine the whole thing; so social factors completely undo all other facets of a persons identity
and so on. So yes I agree with what you are saying loosely but I think it's a stretch to get to the idea that the influence of another person can change your identity. It's much more multifaceted and complex than that to the point where we can't say what factors are even involved really.

I think we're saying the same thing in different ways desu. 'Turned' is an oversimplification, it would be better to say (some social element) 'acted as a contributing factor' but I really think that's a minor thing. The main issue with using the word is, as you said, it implies that the 'turning' factor is all powerful and can make the unilateral decision to 'make' a person trans. I don't think it's unreasonable to say a person can shape your identity, just to say they can wholly determine it.
