When you're still starting out, you shouldn't expect a 1 bedroom. You rent a 2 or 3 bedroom, and split rent, electric, and internet. I rented a 4 bedroom townhouse for like 2k per month, but there were 3 couples and a dude in college all living together in it. My room (the second biggest, with a walk-in closet) was all inclusive at 350 per month. Included fiber optic internet (bleeding edge back then), cable TV, a washer, dryer, everything you wanted to use in the kitchen, an average sized bathroom, and a huge living room with a ~100" HD TV, which cost somewhere in the ballpark of 3 grand. The dude who sublet the place was constantly investing into stuff, since everyone else constantly covered rent and utilities.

So every one of your friends fell flat on their face the first time they tried moving out. That happens. Reality is never what you expect it to be when you leave the familial home and stake out on your own. You learn from it, and adapt.
Also, the guy I rented a room from worked at a rubber molding facility, making $25 per hour. He could afford the place on his own, so if someone else fucked up and missed rent, he would kick them out and get a new tenant in within a few weeks.
Also, never room with friends. Too familiar, and you'll grow to hate each other.
