The father is the only one in this video that isnt escalating the situation. He is just calmly warning the big guy not to attack him. The son makes vulgur gestures, the big guy's wife is encouraging her husband, the big guy is being way too aggressive. I think it could be said that if either side backed off and pursued legal action or called the police, this would have ended very differently. Since the father and son had this option, lethal force wasnt really necessary. But since the big guy charged them with a bat, he brought it on himself. Both parties share a little blame in my opinion.

As someone who has spent time in mental institutions they did everything by the book to instigate an attack.

They kept standing there to give him a target even though there was nothing to be said. They kept assuming an argumentative position to piss him off and get him to argue the opposite. They never offered a middle ground and kept using the fact that they pulled a gun earlier for no good reason as an anchor to sustain the argument. When he said he would take the gun out of their hand they immediately questioned him so he would reaffirm that position and want to prove himself and so on.

This was murder in cold blood. You can't manipulate someone into attacking you then claim self-defense. If that was the case then you could murder someone whenever you wanted so long as you took the necessary steps beforehand.
