You tried the ESL route? Where are you from?

Fellow ESL teacher, have my own language institute

What do you usually spend money on?

Most of my paycheck goes to rent and living expenses
As for disposable income, tech and entertainment. Recently got a ring for my soon to be fiancee

Wtf? Regardless of how you got that credit card debt, you're managing your money like shit unless the credit cards still have the introductory interest-free period. Borrow from your retirement account to pay them off, then pay back the retirement account. There's no way you're making more in whatever fund(s) that money is in than the interest accumulating in the cards.

Attached: 1528893652121s (1).jpg (240x250, 7K)

how do i make money teaching english ESL institute user? Like howd you work your way up into having your own institute?

1. I constantly jump between 0% balance transfer promo offers on my credit cards. Outside of paying a 3 or 4% balance transfer fee once a year, there is no interest

2. There is a penalty for taking my money out of my Roth IRA and I would lose the tax free access to it later in life.

How so?

Age: 31

It's been a tough road. I was an ESL teacher at Berlitz for a couple of years, did all kinds of teaching (A1 through C1, business programs and specializations, kids, etc.). The pay was shit, the franchise in my country wasn't particularly good.

So during my last few months I asked to become a part-timer, and I used the rest of my time to find a book and develop a decent method that would be better for everyone. Then I found a couple of private students and businesses who were interested in my classes (word of mouth mostly) and things kind evolve from there. While I was teaching on my own I got a couple of partners to help out with marketing, branding, finance, content creation, etc. We've been operating legally for a year now and I'm hoping things only get better from here on out. Opening a school is tough, but if you want to do it, you need to know the right people that will let you teach even when you haven't made a name for yourself.

Something else that helps is knowing more than one language or having people who speak other languages. Spanish and portuguese are a big hit in Latin america right now

I'm quite shocked to hear this...

so if i were to get a TEFL and teach english in SEA. could i conceivably sneak into international schools with the CELTA and/or tutoring on the side kind of like what you did? I'm gonna kill myself if i stay in the US

There are so many expats looking to improve their Spanish that I've actually had to turn some of them down because I don't have the man-power to meet the demand

And every shit eating call center wants portuguese because of Brazil, so everyone wants to learn portuguese

Yeah you absolutely could but it would drain the life out of you, depending on the school you teach in.

First step is getting out of the US, though. Your skills are near worthless there. You'd be surprised how many international schools around the world would take you even without a certificate. Shit, I'd probably employ you if you walked in and you showed that you can teach effectively, with or without a certificate

ok ill get back to you in a year or two compadre

So what's your story, bud?

Went to college after high school not knowing what I wanted to do, only that I was supposed to go. Racked up a ton of student debt loan and didn't even graduate. Ten years after leaving school and I still haven't even come close to paying anything off.

Recently divorced and had to move back home. Currently living with brother and his friend while I work a dead end job. Meanwhile, I'm struggling to even find the pieces to pick up before I even think about putting them back together.

Shit sucks.

Software Engineering is a diverse field, there are lots of different types. Think of all of the different types of software

>Websites
>Games
>Accounting software to keep track of customers and sales
>Applications like web browsers and text editors
>Operating systems
>Device drivers that power your mouse and help overclock your GPU
>High throughput low latency servers like Google's search engine platform
>Virtual computation hosting environments like AWS where they can rent out web hosting to any random guy
>Ad targeting software
>Automated stock trading software

The list goes on and on. Each of these different types of software often require different sets of skills to work on. For instance
>Working on websites often requires Javascript, PHP, and HTML skills along with random Javascript frameworks
>Writing device drivers requires in-depth knowledge of computer hardware itself, along with assembly language and C
>Working on the Google search engine requires very advanced algorithms and data structures knowledge along with the help of many data scientists, AI/ML experts who can tease models (deep neural networks, etc) out of exabytes of data

Some of these are harder to learn than others, and are more serious intellectual tasks to learn and make use of in your career, than others

Basically web development is shit tier because any retard can throw together websites without in-depth knowledge of math and theoretical computer science, but high performance computing and systems engineering is God tier and makes you bank because you have to be smart to be capable of doing it.

As for what I personally do, I write highly optimized (meaning it runs as fast as possible in all scenarios, and reliably) server side software to help execute ML algorithms, basically AI-as-a-service for my company, as such I earn a good amount and am respected because it would be hard to replace me since I have specialized skills with advanced C++ and systems engineering knowledge

You have a net worth of -$1,800. That's above the US average, you're doing good. I'm dead unironically serious by the way. Don't worry about it too much, but start earning fren

Medical bills cuz Amerifag & Type 1 diabetus with no insurance.

Constant cycle of running out of insulin, not being able to afford it due to no insurance, being hospitalized due to prolonged extremely high bloodsugars (DKA).

So yeah, we live in a society

How do I get as good as you and make bank?

no memes but american healthcare is nuts, not sure how people haven't violently revolted against it yet

You're already on r9k so that means you're a friendless loser, this is unironically a good start because it might mean you have the concentrated autism required to pull through this

First, how old are you and how smart are you, and what are your grades?

Well, I've been working on a few music projects since I've been back. I've gotten back in with my group of friends, and they've been pretty supportive. I'm also looking at getting into therapy. I've kind of decided that if I'm not ever going to make a regular career, that I should at least try to make some kind of life out of the things I love doing.

I'm down, and I know I'm pretty pessimistic, but I'm not so far gone that I've given up completely. I just have more rough nights than good ones right now, and I'm having trouble seeing the (what I hope to be) the inevitable upswing.
