Freshwater is a breeding ground for bacteria and other nasties. Hence why you dont see grylls chomping down like a bear. The bacteria is in the fish themselves already and could possibly kill. Salt water is hazardous for most nasties and the ones that you do find are in small amounts.

the real way to turn saltwater into fresh without being A Cloth is to use a solar still
