Depends on what kind of teacher you are. Generally there are EAL teachers and international school teachers. EAL teachers won't work or make as much as an international teacher, which is respected more. Although it requires you to actually be a qualified and experienced school teacher before you can apply.
Regardless of which you choose, life will be better in SE Asia.

EAL also has it's own tiers. An edutainment (someone who just plays with kids all day) will usually be done by young people who are on a gap year/ travelling/ failed at life and as such, they get paid and respected very little.
Then you get real EAL teachers who have actual qualifications and experience. They probably won't make as much as an international school teacher, but they will have a better life than edutainers.
Both will get exploited by language centres.

You will pretty much only find work as an English teacher. Do some research on immigration laws, you have to make a certain amount of income as an employee of a Japanese company in order to qualify for a work visa. There are different laws for private trading, investing, and owning a business as a foreigner than as a citizen. Its best to marry a Japanese girl so you can get a garunteed visa or even a citizenship. They dont have diversity visas, so you cant just move to Japan because you want to live there.

When I was on JET a friend of a friend was there playing the Terminator in the stage show at Universal Studios Japan. Pretty sweet gig, and he wasn't ever hurting for pussy. If you can't do something like that though, your options are: 1) be a businessman who gets sent there for work, 2) join the military and get PCSed there, or 3) teach English.
