Does learning a martial art give you any kind of real advantage in a fight?

From what I've seen it seems like it doesn't. In street fight videos featuring any kind of martial artist they always seem to not be effective or get one shorted by some regular yet decently built guy. Some quick web searches and most results say that they're ineffective in real street brawls. Are martial arts just a meme? Is there any actual benefit to learning any?

There is a reason why weight classes exist

Is that just the end all factor? What's the point of even trying to learn anything when some roided up guy who knows nothing can just wreck you without a sweat?

>Does learning to fight give you an advantage in a fight?

Most martial arts are fake and don't work. The only thing you need to know is western boxing and wrestling. All the martial arts where you have people with Chinese pajamas and stupid belts on are fake. Its funny because wrestling and western boxing are both sports but they can beat pretty much any martial art

>Is that just the end all factor
It's a big factor but not the end all.

bjj is ground wrestling
muay thai is extremely good too

pretty much it though

>All the martial arts where you have people with Chinese pajamas and stupid belts on are fake

Except bjj

The point is its a fun sport. Most martial artists you see in those videos are usually begineers to some degree most trained probably wouldn't fight. It's pointless at the end of the day. You get nothing out of it except a cut up face a few bruises and maybe the chance of the police coming after you with an assult charge. Its a lose lose situation.

1)BJJ is extremely watered down and its going to get even more watered down as its still gaining popularity. Finding a good BJJ school is pretty hard to do. I say this as someone that loves jiu jitsu. Most places you'll just have a guy show an armbar and a guard escape and tell the class to do it a few times. After that the guy will give a speech about hespect and tell everyone to do 5 minute rolling.
2)Wrestling beats BJJ
Regarding Muay thai, I never really liked it from an outside perspective. Just looking at their stance and movement I see a sport where people just get hit a lot and are in a perfect stance to get taken down.

It just seems weird that so many martial arts are esentially useless. Is it even possible to be actually and consistently good at fighting?

Yeah. You just have to fight and be comfortable in a fight. I've been getting in fights from kindergarten up to 8th grade and I was pretty good. I'm the guy above who said most of them are fake. I did Taekwondo for 5 years and Karate for a year which is how I know they're fake. I was good at fighting before doing these and I'm still good. If you want to win fights you need to know wrestling and western boxing. Doing jiu jitsu is better than the fake Chinese stuff but at the end of the day you'll still end up in a watered down school where you'll learn more hespect and less fighting.

1st quote is most likely true but i do both wrestling and bjj and our classes are pretty good. our school gets a good ampunt of medals in tourneys.
2. i prefer wrestling too but its still viable
3. liking something doesnt mean anything about its viably user come on now. id argue a good low kick is one of the best forms of self defense there is. i also condone strikig+grappling training. prefer a nice grapple myself though.

Yeah but more thank your ability to fight comes into it. You need to pick your battles. Only fight if you know for certain you'll win. On the street it's really dangerous and things can go really wrong. In MMA and boxing the thing that stops you from dying is the ref. On the street there is no ref. If your getting pummeled and you can't get your composure the fight stops when the other guy decides and that might be when your dead. Angry drunk guys don't tend to stop punching once you go down. Multiple apononents are tricky too. You need to be very skilled just to take two on effectively in those cases it's better to run if you can. But yeah the bigger guy will usually win. The amount of force you hit with depends on your weight a smaller guy will have to get more hits in while a built guy or just a fat dude will just need one lucky hit to take you down.

I did both as well and learned bjj in a taekwondo school where a bjj guy came in to teach us. My opinion on Muay Thai is just my opinion and I cannot say for fact it sucks the way Karate,TKD,aikido suck. I just wouldn't practice it but its not terrible.

lol that bjj shit sounds funny and yes you're right in that regard.

and truly if i was to "min-max" id go your route and wrestle+box. good ole western brawler style

It might sound funny but I recently went to a friends bjj school(the school gave me a free class) and I knew more than the entire class even though I haven't done it in 3 years. I'm in rugby rn but I definitely plan on going back to MMA once school is over as long as I can find a good jiu jitsu place.

That's the Thai mentality. Always forward, never giving ground. You see this in mexican boxers as well.
Muay Thai is arguably the best form of striking with a modified stance i.e wider to better facilitate takedown defense and lower centre of gravity.
Using every part of your body that can feasibly be used as a weapon in a controlled and skilled manner with lethal power, is the very definition of Muay Thai.
BJJ is a bit of a meme without some good basis on how to land takedowns, and not optimal for street defense.
Based on these things, Either Sambo or Wrestling combined with Muay Thai is the best possibly combination for ending fights as fast as possible.

Most fights happen in childhood. If you've never been in one why worry now?

As long as the other guy can't do this to you, you can always win

It's fucked man, it's not worth the bragging rites. It really not

Its tragic too. Whatever was the reason for the fight is definitely not worth the damage done to the kid's head or the damage done to the other dude's future. A stupid school fight like that most likely ruined both of their lives.

you sound like a proper big guy athlete. just whay i aspire to. props my man

Having 8 weapons doesn't make you any scarier than the dude with only 2 weapons. I'm much more scared of a sambo guy who can just kickbox and wrestle than a Muay thai dude who can kick, elbow, punch, knee me.

Not likely. Nobody really gets in trouble for fights. Not serious trouble anyway.

where does MMA fall in this scheme?

where does "lifting weights" fall in a chart of different lifts?

I'm from Armenia where I used to fight all the time and nobody got in trouble. I moved to the US in middle school and kids here would get tickets and go to court when they got in a fight. Last time I got in a fight(which I lost) I almost went to court.

>boxing
>better than muay thai or combat sambo

this HAS to be a troll image

Thanks bro, good luck in your MMA future.

i think it says in the top part that MMA is basically a combination of boxing and brazillian jiu jitsu. id say MMA is like S tear because its training to fight a skilled opponent looking to hurt you and ultimately beat you so id say MMA training would put you leagues above any one else in a 1v1 street fight type fight. i didnt make the graphic came across it the other day on Jow Forums and thought it good info. im loooking at getting into it for cardio and am interested in learning some fighting for fun.

Daily reminder that BJJ is a massive meme

Punching is arguably the least efficient way to transfer kinetic energy from your body to another person's.
A person who trains in both wrestling and Muay Thai as a clinch specialist will punish you inside and outside of the grappling aspect, especially if you only have experience as a boxer. It sounds like you've never fought on an amateur or professional level.
t. ama muay thai fighter, 18-1-4

most mma gyms teach muay thai, boxing, and some form of grappling

you can readily infer that training in 3+ martial arts at once is not as effective of a way to master anything, but you are probably ready to fight a random person faster than 3 years

>MMA is basically a combination of boxing and brazillian jiu jitsu
You forgot muay thai, judo, karate, sambo, and sanshou

mma is anything that works. Not every fighter is a carbon copy of each other.

His reasoning is solid. Never in my life have I ever been to a boxing gym that turned out to be a mcdojo.

thanks champ. ate a dick last bjj tourney. going for a nogi in 2 weeks in the weight class above mine cause im a stubborn cock. god bless fighters

MMA is "mixed martial arts" not boxing + bjj. Literally any combo could be called MMA

I would bet money a fighter from either of the other two styles would cream pie any boxer.

This.

I learnt how to fight better in two boxing classes than I did in two years of Gracie Barra BJJ training.

As someone who's experienced in BJJ, unless they know a form of striking, the BJJ guy would get impregnated.

obviously yes MMA (mixed martial arts) uses any fight style that you can make effective but broadly speaking its has both grappling and striking which is what the guy wanted to know. so i didnt want to split hairs and list every martial art like you to answer a basic question.

Attached: 1429085280251.jpg (325x368, 28K)

If you practice an hour a day for each martial art five days a week you're going to master them. Your brain doesn't need to remember techniques when your body has that shit memorized.

we're not talking about bjj, buy royce gracie already beat a boxer in his first ufc fight

underrated post, the value of boxing isnt that its going to prepare you for everything

the value is that god damnit it will prepare you for most things, and a total novice doesnt have to try and determine whether the gym is a mcdojo

>implying any Royce Gracie match counts as a fair fight

15 hours a week is a steep commitment to expect of someone from Jow Forums, but yes, if you train 15 hours a week consistently you will shitrock someone who doesnt

If you can jack it for 10 - 20 hours a week (going by the sad, sad Jow Forums average) you can spend 15 whacking a heavy bag

I think the idea is that there's a lot of McDojo's, and they generally train for the sport rather than self defense.

That's really good dude. Your experience with nogi will translate really well into actual fights and into things like wrestling, rugby or football if you ever plan on trying other sports

You're right. I've never been in a cagefight so your knowledge from experience is probably better than mine. I still wouldn't do Muay thai because I don't like Asian fighting styles

Literally just kickboxing. Not "monkey style" shit

>All the martial arts where you have people with Chinese pajamas and stupid belts on are fake

What is bjj? What is judo? What is kyokushin karate?

There is a reason why there are time limits too.
It is the same as why there are weight classes.
Marketability. Especially with the short attention span of millenials.

Stop it Hoyce, it's not 1993 anymore.
>2. Wrestling beats BJJ
Where, in the streeeetzzzz? On the mats? in wrestling or bjj rules? in ADCC? In the UFC? In your imagination?Ooops...
Opposite bjj beats wrestling falls under the same category of "I-don't-train-enough-to-earn-the-right-to-say-anything-about-it".
>It just seems weird that so many martial arts are esentially useless.
Once the martial focus is not on practice and live sparring anymore, it loses its efficiency little by little.

not kyokushin or shidokan

We don't actually know, but some theorize those are some type of dog

Why is the faggot beating the fatso? Why is the fatso not defending himself?

Why are mma fags so retarded?

It's because Congress thought it was too brutal without weight classes and rounds.

those are all pussy activities.

why not

i do aikido ... works everytime and is the most practical in real life. all you anons dont know shit itt

t. bodyguard at a club

This guy doesn't train and has never fought lol. Boxing sucks. Muay Thai is simpler and more effective. Bjj beats wrestling. Judo beats wrestling. Sambo is probably best all around single discipline.

Karate and Tkd are effective if you actually spar

One leg kick and any boxer is done. Boxing if for people who want to swing hard and feel tough. Not for people who want to effectively win every time.

>street fight
The biggest psychopath who doesn't know any limits and punches you first and without break on the head wins

>restricted fight
The biggest guy with the best technique wins

My tricep/elbow is inflammated and painful, should I skip kickboxing today? Any time someone punches my glove it hurts. Should I just rest and ice it?

Judo is legit tho

>What is kyokushin karate?
Kickboxing with some funny rules about legal target areas

> bodyguard at a club
Wich means you just push over rich kids. Don't brag.
Bouncer is something else. Especially when the public establishement you work in has "patron" that misbehave and are on average over 220lbs.
>street fight
>The biggest psychopath who doesn't know any limits and punches you first and without break on the head wins
Nope.
>My tricep/elbow is inflammated and painful, should I skip kickboxing today? Any time someone punches my glove it hurts. Should I just rest and ice it?
>punches in the gloves, pain somewhere else...
Rest it, unless you're in Thailand in a camp.

Act like a nigger, die like a nigger

>krav

There are no legit krav schools because it has no competitive circuit, and they don't have any showing in MMA

Only option in area is boxing club, bjj that's $$$, or karate...
Wut do

Boxing, always. Karate is a meme, but it is good starting point if you want to switch to kickbox/muay thai in a few years so you can throw some kicks better, nothing more.

Bumpo

Yeah, it would be better to cool it for at least day or two. When I had some problems like that, but really wanted to go to the gym, I would come, do some stretching, maybe some kicks and thats it, no need to force your hands and spar. But only if you really want to go to the gym and do something, and think you can.

Depends on what you want and your finance.
Go try both, they always offer trial classes.

Yeah, boxing is pretty cheap.
There isn't always a coach there or sometimes no one is there at all though...
They're having a hard time keeping people consistent.
Bjj is like 250 for 3 months though, and the instructors do compete.

Mainly looking for something as an accessory to lifting.
I carry a gun.
But often wondered what I would do if I was attacked or couldn't get to it other then going full REEEEEEEEE

>There isn't always a coach there or sometimes no one is there at all though...
Avoid at all costs then.
Lesson in life #1: You can't buy time. You cannot exchange time for something else. You can just do things faster to spend less of it at what you're currently doing.
Plus if the bjj school is legit with competitors, it might be fun.

Attached: 1411368662388.webm (512x384, 1.46M)

That's what I was going to explain. Steroids make you super human.

Yeah, might have to agree then. For beginnings, its important to have someone guide you. Its a lot easier to learn from 0, than to learn it wrong, unlearn it and learn it again the right way. Also BJJ is not bad for self defence, if you go 1 on 1 with someone. I 2 on 1 you are probably fucked, but that can apply to anything really.

I went with a friend once.
We ended up doing jump rope and warm up exercises for an hour until a coach showed up.
After that we did drills for about an hour and a half.
It was helpful and the coach helped me with stance, and the coach that was supposed to show didnt.
Schedule seems fast and loose.
But when there Is a coach there you get smoked.

Haven't been to the bjj class yet, but the instructors are black belts who compete and are titled. Was considering just commiting the 3 months to It even though it's pricey.

What will happen in a street fight? Considering 95% of men on the street will be sedentary and untrained, they're either going to try and throw you down or land a hayemaker, and gas after 30 seconds. Is this wrong?

Therefore, boxing and wrestling are the most useful for basic self defense. Learning takedown defense, getting swung on and how to takedown will put you at a massive advantage to most people right?

T. someone who wants to be able to handle himself if some guy tries to make himself the big man in front of my GF and I don't want to look like a pussy, or if one of my bros is getting fucked up by some guys.

Show me one video where the martial artist lose and I will show you two videos, where the martial artist wins.

>Does learning a martial art give you any kind of real advantage in a fight?
Yes, why wouldn't it? As long as it's not a meme martial art, you'll learn how to fight.

Sage Northcutt is Hitler's wet dream

actually read the chart you autist

Lads, you're all missing the point. OP is talking about street fights, not a style vs style match. Trust me, the chance of finding someone on the streets who knows how to fight properly is quite low. It doesn't matter if you know boxing, mt, wrestling or any other decent martíal artist, you will still wreck the average joe.

as a 5'7 manlet what is the most effective martial art to learn for self defense?

The blood is from the wrestler, the boxing guy landed all his hits but the other dude just sucked them up, you can see he is stumbling and wiping his face
Watching it with sound you can hear solid impacts

boxing isnt an overly complicated sport it only has 6 blows and anyone should be able to learn and do them correctly in about 10 minutes, and people say that shit sucks in a street fight and all that but in my experience if youre in the habit of training any sort of fighting art youre at a massive advantage in a street fight cus most people dont know much at all about fighting and have bad reflexes, if you do a bit of boxing for even six months you should be able to kick most peoples butts, that being said some people will just straight up try to pull out your eyes as a first attack and pretty much every one has about the same threshold for getting knocked out. meh

Mui Thai

We have a lot of angry manlets at my gym that throw elbows and knees from another dimension.

If bjj was hard it’d be called sambo
