When you have had a miserable life you gravitate towards any short term gratification. The past was shitty and the future likely will be too. So your brain is wired to capitalize on any easy source of pleasure, because humans want to feel good sometimes. It's possible to change this through hard work. You actually have to start believing that the future will be better and you don't need short term impulsive pleasure from food/drugs/porn. It takes a while to pay off and your brain will fight you the whole way.

I think you're completely right. There has been a massive push towards this fatalist view of the world through materialism.
The idea that everything that is, and everything that will be is a result of factors outside of your control. That the universe is a machine, a complicated one, but determined to have an eventual output that is unchangeable.
As a result people give up on long term happiness or ways to achieve it with the thought that its impossible unless its fated to be, so they'll just fall into it if its meant to be and just enjoy life right now because they can't be sure they'll be able to in the future.
The biggest threat to our society is letting people believe they are worthless. They are expendable and replaceable. Its why people shoot up schools. Its why people become addicted to drugs. Its why people eat themselves to death. Its why people prey on the weak to get material wealth.
It is the core problem we are facing and nobody is talking about it. Nobody cares. We're living in an age where most poeple earnestly believe they are helpless small motes of dust on a speck flying through space with no reason. We used to have god that gave us a higher motivation, but now we don't have that, and they've replaced it with progressiveness for the sake of saying "I did something" whether it actually attains real results or not.
