How did user decide on his college major?
How did user decide on his college major?
heres my story
>be 6
>christmas
>dad a biochemist mom a pharmacist
>gets a microscope
>"im gonna be a scientist"
>parents say "you're going to be a scientist"
flashforward 13 ish years
>biology major with concentrations in cell and molecular and infectious disease
its easy
>zoology
S-seriously? I'm a double major in geology and zoology. I really love zoology - particularily insects - but always figured mining and geology would be a better plan financially.
I'm about to go to grad school, but have no idea what I want. I have a chance to be in a pretty prestigious geochemistry lab, but I still have this dream of working with animals.
What do, anons?
Initially, to appease my parents while somewhat thinking it was what i wanted to do. Eventually, I did what I could to get out in 4.5 years. I wish I had gone to smaller school or program.
Originally, I figured I'd try engineering because it would please my parents. Initially settled on aerospace engineering because I wanted to do something involved with space exploration/research. Had a headstart on it because I was in a scholars program in high school that allowed me to take some transferable credits at a community college.
I slowly became disillusioned with it because I never applied for internships and realized I'd probably be working for a defense contractor rather than be doing what I wanted. The school was also fairly large so I felt like just a number or soulless face to most the professors there. Most the professors barely spoke English as well (at least the ones stuck lecturing). I largely stopped attending class and nearly failed out mid-Junior year. That led to me getting out of sync with the classes that were offered once a year, so I inevitably switched majors so I wasn't stuck there forever. The school had too many students, so it was impossible to get into the classes I needed as well.
Took off a semester and returned. Jumped around a ton and ended up graduating with a ton of extra credits. Finished a bullshit degree that combines physics/astronomy, aerospace engi, and geophysics so I could graduate faster. Contemplating returning for a masters now that I have a handle on what I actually want to do now. Grades are kind of shit though due to my first 2 years but have the prereqs for most anything - provided I get in first. I wish I had originally done astronomy or physics. The departments were a lot smaller; professors were more engaged. That kept me more invested when I returned, and my grades showed that as well.
>Highest income
>Unemployment rate matches No. 1
>No. 4
Actuaryfag be realistic. Also medicine does not have a 2.3% unemployment rate; more like 0.23%.
I was going to be an ecologist because it's basically the most interesting field in existence, especially paleoecology. Now I make lots of money programming computers and I still feel like I got screwed.
ecology is the lowest tier of biology
I'm thinking of going into digital designs
how fucked am I, anons?
I went to a bunch of "enrichments" in high school to explore different job prospects. My favorite one was visiting University of Michigan's chemistry labs. I loved organic chem and decided that I could do good for the world and get into an industry that was still figuring itself out.
How do people even go to college?
My grades were shit since leaving elementary and I pretty much realized I'd never attend.
Oh well, least my brother has the student debt, not me.
Dude, I love paleoecology too! The geology (and the fact I like seds and chemistry) helps a lot.
Hope things work out. Maybe learn programs relevant to bio?
>parents push me to go to college
>"I like politics I guess..."
Now I'm about done with a poli sci degree and am getting no job offers
I didnt decide, I kinda just fell into it. I had no idea what I wanted to do and I heard it was a very open ended degree. I still dont know what I will do with it when I graduate
>enter college wanting to do comp sci
>realize I hate it and switch to management information systems
>take required accounting class
>really good at accounting
>decide to switch to accounting
The End
>parents begged me to try a semester of community college just to see if I like it
>do general education and absolutely hate it
>tell my parents I hate college and I don't want to go back to college and I want to get a full-time job and move out instead
>they veto that and force me to keep going
>finally compromise with them and promise I will keep going if I could just learn a trade instead
Now I'm doing a one-year welding degree and once I get my piece of paper I am going to fuck off to the woods for a bit and try to undo the number this whole experience has put on my nerves. I wake up every morning feeling like I've been punched in the stomach. My mom is telling me to sign up for financial aid even though this should be my last year in college. I'm scared she won't stop until I'm in a university doing what she wants me to do.
I wanted a major that was useless like me, so I picked History
>be me
>mathbot because it's enjoyable and something you can do quietly by yourself
>pick math as major because I already self-studied 95% of it, because what the fuck else would I do with my life
>coast through without having to give a shit
>mfw
Youre an adult now man. Take that welding degree and get a good job and move out.
It plays to my strengths and the average salary 6mos post graduation is over 40k bongs at my uni
Sweet man. I'm doing accounting right now too.
Yeah Im gonna either work for mr.noseburg for 10-15 years and retire on my savings or start a small practice and do small business taxes. HAvent thought too much about it though.
>nuclear engineering
>1.8% unemployment
more like 1.8% of them actually have jobs related to nuclear engineering, the rest are like mcdonalds managers
>he actually fell for the higher education meme
I'm poor, didn't know what I wanted to do for a living, and the local community college offered it. Information technology. I also like computers so I guess it works.
