He doesn't necessarily have to be rich, but there are many fucked up women that fall in love with deadbeats for whatever reason. Often it's because they're attracted to something about him like how he's a bad boy or whatever. Or he has status somehow, it could be he's a drug dealer or criminal because some women see that as status.
