Shishkin is generally considered part of the realism movement. I'm not too sure about the pic that user posted, but Waldmuler is part of the Beidermeier (sp.) period of art, which similarly coveted accurate portrayal of distance, colours, light etc.

The beidermeier period was well known for appealing to common taste - it wasn't trying to "stand out" and be obtuse, it was simply trying to recreate the beauty that every man can see in the world.
