Nobody realizes they are not white until the world tells them. That's better said as no one recognizes they are "other" because race isn't thought of, you know people (family) look like you but you also know everyone on tv is white so you identify with it all you don't know there's a real distinction. If you are 1/4th African American, then that means that you are in all likelihood only 1/5 black and 4/5 white, because African-Americans are around 20% white on average.
