If you're having issues with Python then you're going to suffer with C++. You need to learn CS concepts using Python, because it's so user-friendly.

I wanted to learn programming to give back to the community that supports my lavish lifestyle, but found I could not keep up. But in all seriousness, this was a free online course.

There's your problem. Don't learn programming from Codecademy, it's a fucking joke. Pick up a book on beginner Python where it breaks down examples and explains CS concepts using Python.

I guess what I'm saying is the math that _most_ programming requires is basic. Basic as in arithmetic. I'm not trying to beat you up, I'm just genuinely confused. What did you get stuck on?

26 years old. Finishing up final prep to move into my own apartment, out of my parents' house after 3 miserable years back in this hellhole. I'll even have the confidence to pursue a girlfriend, having a place to bring her back to. I've got a decent job that doesn't pay great but is a fantastic starting place to move up, I've got my Warhammer army that I'm cleaning and painting, and should be done by early next year. I've also got ambitions to earn a Master's/PhD in Byzantine studies some day, which could be very plausible. I've already been on a few Archaeological digs.

It's been a tough couple years, but I think things are finally looking up, bros.

Those people are probably Jow Forums, and you should probably ignore them. C++ is probably the last language a sane person would recommend a beginner to start with. It's a huge language that is full of foot-guns. C# wouldn't be as bad, but python is a good place to start, desu (and I personally hate python).

Most books have exercises. That will help you with the logic of the language. Learning to organize your code in a larger project is something you'll have to pick up on your own as you go, though.

I'm 25 with a degree in Computer Science, but I hate what I am doing... I might go back for a PhD in CS or attempt to pivot careers entirely to Math or Physics, but all of this is a long road, time consuming and then I'll be really old. All of this is a gamble too because I could just end up doing boring shit anyways. Also, I'm a brainlet. Feels bad man. :( I ought to ascend to ultimate boomer form and just be content with now and not obsess about abandoning one road because something else 'seems' appealing because I am discontented. I just need to not be petty and have gratitude for what I have.

Look, there are no real agreed upon right or wrong ways to learn programming. If you feel like you're not gaining anything then you move onto another method of study. Codecademy is a joke because it doesn't teach you anything and just throws you into the deep end while you just fill in the blanks without understanding shit.

Python is a really simple language (don't let this discourage or make you feel stupid), but there's so much disinformation out there that it's hard to know how to study programming.

Look up bookzz on duckduckgo and pirate the books that are mentioned here (quora.com/Which-is-the-best-book-for-learning-python-for-absolute-beginners-on-their-own)

For practice, just look up Project Euler (and clones of it) and start cracking out the solutions. Make sure you read the PDFs to problems that have them, because they explain the proper method instead of bruteforcing.

I disagree with this. I had a lot of problems with python when I first was learning programming. I decided to learn C instead which is a lower level language, and after that things began to click and I started to understand how programming works. I learned Java next which isnt my favorite language but I think worth knowing an OOP language. Even now I still dislike python. I recognize how powerful it is but its a bit different than the typical language, I rather use brackets than forced indenting and iirc instead of for loops python has something like range. I recommend you give c++ a try user and see if it works better for you

I literally learned algebra through vector calculus outside of highschool. The hardest part about it is was beating myself up for not getting something immediately. Just relax and work on it one thing at a time. Divide-and-conquer is literally life's magic bullet.
Not really. My first language was C and the book was aimed at engineering students, so I can't help you there. I have recommendations for other CS topics, but not and intro to programming books.

There's no right or wrong way, it depends on the individual and how well they absorb certain languages and concepts. You struggled with it and moved to another language, which is acceptable. But telling someone to go learn C instead of Python is cruel.

I've been thinking. I have some debt I'd like to pay off (school and medical.) the money I make is mediocre but I'm pretty frugal so it's been alright. However, I feel my rent is way too high. Including utilities I pay about 1500 a month for my own studio. Would it be crazy to sublease this place and swipe up some $600-800/month room in a shared house? 28 years old, single. tfw. That would allow me to bank a big chunk more dosh each month at least, pay this debt down. Only thing is I really fucking hate living with other people and am a light sleeper, so it's always been a hassle living with other people unless they were early risers and early to bed types.

I've feeling pretty down. For many reasons (and being a slacker is one of them, but there are more) I've been very behind my school work (after getting back to college) and I'm behind as fuck. One week is not enough to prepare and I feel overwhelmed, it seems like even trying to study at this point would be a waste of time.

I'd say you should focus your study along a few certain areas: Math (Discrete topics, Basic Calculus, Linear Algebra, Intro to Probability), Computer Science (Intro to programming, Intro to Algorithms, other misc topics) and Computers themselves (Intro to Computer Architecture / Systems, Intro to Operating Systems).

This is just a primer. MIT OCW has a lot of stuff so make sure you comb it all over to see what you need or seems interesting.

As a programmer for 10+ years I can tell you that its horrible being one. The skill isn't anything special at all, any Pajeet can learn to code and thats what you'll be competeing with. When is too late to restart school? I just turned 26.
