They're going through a series of somewhat infrequent hookups in the hope of finding a relationship, or they're in a relationship, or they're almost-but-not-quite-cheating and on their way out of a relationship and into a new one. Most of the hookups will be with men who avoid commitment, because those are the men who are available at any given time, and so most women who've been single for any length of time will become jaded about men.

Men are slightly different - they're either just out of a relationship (in which case they'll be snapped up pretty quickly), in a relationship, hooking up with lots of women, or not getting laid at all. The latter two groups are comparatively small, but men who stay in them for a long time become jaded about women, and the men who aren't getting laid hate the men who are casually swimming through a sea of women.
