Hey man, I'm actually a libertarian socialist, but in this case, I think youtube has the right to deem what is and isn't acceptable to be shown on their site due to . But I understand both very real dangers of getting cucked by the government and getting cucked by corporations. I think that the goal for the average person should be to remain uncucked.

Then we're in agreement. I guess it's just depressing to see the internet change the way it has been over the last few years. And it largely seems to be the result of corporate influence from the tech giants who rely on ad revenue. It's nice that creators are getting some real paychecks (even though there are some serious issues there), but that was never what made the internet great for me. It's just turning into fucking television or some other prepackaged bullshitfest.

I guess I just don't want to see that happen here...

Yeah, I think things started to go downhill in 2008, when smartphones and other mobile devices became popular, allowing many more people to access the internet regularly, forcing companies to pander to their plebeian, lowbrow, shit norman/NPC tastes. That in turn started the rise of ads on webpages, leading to what you describe. But at least some places and sites are relatively untouched still.

So if it's an idea and not a law (or a idea for which certain rights inspired therein are protected or enshrined in law), why da fuck would anyone expect a private company with the imperative of increasing shareholder value by it's main revenue stream of selling advertising space to restrict it's own earning power by allowing the fullest possible gamut of individual expression on their platform? Knowing full well that doing so may make ad buyers, account manages and the executives at client companies that okay their budgets reluctant to spend more money on advertising on their platform?

Because free speech on an online platform with millions of people is fun. If anything free speech may even increase ad revenue because if companies "censor" everyone they'll lose users. Less users equals less ad revenue. Facebook and twitter are losing users and value in the stock market. Censoring people doesn't seem to be helping.

In that case, it was in the the hosting platform and paypal's collective interest to improve their reputation in the eyes of normans by removing gab. The media companies can say whatever they want about it, as they are also composed of private corporations. Remember, the bottom line in these types of cases is usually what matters the most. Money is the root of a good portion of all evil. If you want your own site with completely unrestricted speech, like stormfront or something, then you're going to have to set up a server and host it yourself, and also come up with a way to take donations and payments without using a third party service, precisely due to the reasons above and .

Yeah, I wasn't really that clear on that. Companies can "reserve the right to refuse service" to anyone, but if that person is a part of a protected class and can prove that the company's decision not to serve them was due to discrimination, then they might be able to serve the company with a lawsuit, giving the company a bit of trouble on their hands. Idk exactly how this works, as I'm not a lawyer, so someone please correct me if need be. But I think that's a decent summation of the situation.

You need to treat the internet like the real world. If you go into a restaurant and call black diners nigger, you get kicked out of the establishment. We use the internet to socialize, keep updated on the news, and shop. It's going to reflect reality.

I'm against censorship as well, but companies have the right to make decisions that they think will be profitable (within the confines of the law ofc), and in this case normalfags and SJWs have forced their hand, making them remove accounts spewing fringe beliefs. It's either losing one or the other group, and the latter makes up a much larger portion of the userbase on those types of sites. The inner machinations of the norman's mind are truly an enigma.

Some sites, like this one, allow for greater expression of free speech. It's just that when the userbase gets so large, it's harder to maintain that, as some stupid self-important shit is bound to get offended by perceived slights.

Just because the gubbermint gives a company a subsidy doesn't mean they are suddenly beholden to the same rules as them. They still get to operate as a corporation, they just get the subsidy because they employ many people or provide some other perceived good service to society at large.

Good point, people should have the right to contact their elected representatives, but do they always have the right to do it on twitter? They can't go protest on the doorstep of the white house, so there are obviously some limitations, but where do they end? This seems to be one of the grey areas that slipped through the cracks in modern laws concerning this area.

Yeah, same problem as above, people should be entitled to receive emergency warnings, but they can still view twitter, so there is some leeway here.

Agreed about the people making a big deal about past celebrity tweets, but I was talking more about people who recoil at the use of what are considered highly offensive words by society, and tweets about forming a white ethnostate and such. Normals like following the herd, but they also love saving face and virtue signalling, so these kinds of things don't really fly on twitter today.

It's not the startups that are the problem, it's just hard to get people to switch to an unfamiliar site from something they are used to and have known for more than a decade. Most people also don't care enough to even consider making the switch in the first place, as they don't really see many benefits in being able to discuss fringe political ideas. It's not like myspace vs facebook, where one was considered by many people to be a better product that all their friends were using at the time. So alternative sites will always have a smaller userbase than the mainstream ones (the hint is in the names).
