Not OP, there's almost always at least one nerd fraternity on campus. You might not go up in social status but you'll be able to make at least a few good friends, and they probably won't turn you away.

If you can't make a big name frat then join one that has a smaller presence in your area (but still nationwide ) that needs members they will be forced to take you

literally though explain to me the benefit of paying to join a frat. I went to a school with a fairly active greek life and all the events they threw worth actually going to were either open to the public or easy as shit to get into simply by knowing one or two guys there. Why the fuck would I pay thousands of dollars in dues for the privilege of living in some shitty beer encrusted dorm packed with other people when I could just rent my own apartment and show up only for the good bits?

Trying is not a good way to make friends.
