I think the social media takeover in the late 00's early 10's really opened up memes to everyone and their grandma (literally). This lowered the barrier to entry so much that it allowed EVERYONE to try making memes and now we're seeing just the lowest common denominator, highest mass appeal bullshit. Half the "memes" people laugh at and share are literally just twitter screenshots or iPhone messages. Actual plain fucking text is considered a meme nowadays. This used to be such a great country, I don't know what happened to it.

Used to be, what made something a meme was a single concept/format (not sure if I'm explaining this properly) being reposted, spreading quickly ('viral') and giving birth to more altered versions of it. Take virgin walk for example. One concept that became popular, reposted and then altered in many different ways. Nowadays, what's called a 'meme' is really any picture with text on it or around it.
