The man in the picture made a huge fuck-up in a nuclear facility in Japan. Dropped a bucket with some sort of plutonium mixture in it, and exposed himself to a fuckton of radiation. Instead of letting him die a quick and painful death, japanese doctors/scientists kept him alive for as long as possible to study the effects of radiation on the body. His name is Hiroshi Ouchi and he worked at a uranium reprocessing facility and was told to store a type of uranium mixture in a bucket and it got too close to itself and hit criticality. He was exposed to Cherenkov radiation, about 8 sieverts of radiation which is roughly the equivalent to what was at the center of the Hiroshima atomic bomb. At first he looked fine but his organs slowly shut down, he could no longer produce tears and his eyes would bleed, all his skin fell off. He was awake and conscious this entire time. He lived for 83 days before his death outfought the doctors. there is an interesting book on the incident called A Slow Death: 83 Days of Radiation Sickness. He was one of two people to die in the incident.

No he was conscious and aware for about 70 days, no coma. After about 70 days he went into cardiac arrest and likely suffered major brain damage. But for about 20 days maybe less, he looked largely normal (when the accident happened there was no harm to his body except a swollen hand) and this was a slow process to get him to here. But there are points before it got this bad where they probably should have let him die.

one of the effects he suffered was that it almost entirely wiped out his white blood cell count and so he was INCREDIBLY prone to infections of all sort including gangrenous (often on the feet), his immunity was almost solely based on medication which they were giving him. however I don't know if that picture is him, in the book I read about the incident there were pictures looking very similar to the posted individual though I don't recall mention of an amputation.
