Reasons to watch anime:
1. It is free and in surplus unlike western shows that are guarded like diamonds in sub-to-watch concentration camps.
2. Big eyes convey more emotion and can be better used to convey emotion than live action shows in which emotions often feel fake. If anime writers didn't suck balls at writing plotlines, anime could be much more enthralling than even real life.

Firstly, anime was not passed via the internet on 1994. It was all VHS tapes and word of mouth. They were expensive, too, because the market was practically non-existant. It was all Akira, Ninja Scroll, Perfect Blue and the like.
Second, the US anime community has suffered because of mainstream exposure. Censorship, SJW dubs, normie interest, and because of seasonal streaming, the community thinks they have to watch everything. Not just the good shows. Manga is on the decline, too.
