Can we talk about the Discord epidemic?

Discord is a piece of shit. It destroys communities by design.
Things like inactivity kicking are needed to get even the slightest amount of activity other than people who just go through their server list every now and then to post a meme or advertise.
It's not a community at all, yet everyone flocks to it and abandons all other platforms.
Furthermore, it collects all your data (the button in the privacy settings does nothing, the client still sends the same info) - especially if they don't trust you (download your data package and look for a /reporting/tns/ folder... their website doesn't explain anything either), I have a /tns/ folder and it has just over 3 MILLION log events from as many events it could take from my browser and phone. Since, I've sent formal requests to destroy all my data and remove me (who knows if they actually did). Join me.
Want to start an actual community? Use a different platform. Literally any one of them. Slack, Rocket.Chat, Mumble, TeamSpeak, forums, Twitter, Matrix, your own boards, a wiki, or even a fucking facebook group, no matter what you pick you'll have a better community than on Discord.

I have discord and I don't have a trap gf. Explain this atheists

Better than skype was

>robot
>caring about privacy
ok

I've spent a couple years taking care of a server and I can confirm that discord is a piece of shit that eats all my ram and exposes me to the worst of the worst.
Very easy and convenient to use though. I use it to chat with my trap egf whomst I met on IRC, I would never date a regular discord user.

the solution is based irc

the second you start one i'll consider it

please tell me what i can do to find a gf. trap gf, or even just a cute boyfriend, i will take any advice i can get
i just want to find a pure relationship with someone

i used to have twitter. yeah i did, until i had over 50 or more accounts suspended and got suspended after a week

same but i also don't watch anime.
i do exist.

>i just want to find a pure relationship with someone
Start with having a pure relationship with your self.

I only use one r9k discord and its the biggest one (T/A), chat isn't dead and its an ok place to vent
>inb4 durrr post invite link

The only thing I've ever used discord for is keeping in touch with my D&D group. We're not an online group, we meet IRL and mostly just call/text each other if something comes up but sometimes someone will leave a message on discord if they have something going on

>my community
This is precisely the fucking problem. It's supposed to be OUR community. Why the hell would anyone want to join your community?

cus it has 500 members lmoa

This is proper, healthy use of Discord.

This is not.

And how many of them actually participate as a community? Maybe 4, 5, if any at all?
Meanwhile, I run a closed Rocket.Chat and have 100+ actually active users..
Ever considered pruning everyone who hasn't talked in a week, and then seeing with how many you're left?

caring about privacy is the most robot thing there is you dumb fuck

Attached: IMG_20181217_164423.jpg (640x640, 97K)

what does that even mean
i bet you don't even know

around 50 cus its a multi-server community so we split up into multiple but aight lol

I preferred the days of skype, where communities were smaller, and people actually used voice chat instead of just using discord like IRC
It's primary use should be for talking while playing videogames, but it's turned into a cesspool of degenerates and people who have never joined a voice channel once in their life.

the massive skype communities were the best ones tho

It means to stop judging yourself.
It means to let go of the belief that you're not good enough, the belief that you don't deserve help, the belief that you don't deserve to be loved, and the belief that "I will never make it".
It means to honor yourself and respect yourself. It means to become conscious of how you want all people, including yourself, to treat yourself.
It means to stand up for your boundaries and not let people, including yourself, treat you worse than you deserve.
It means to become conscious of your needs, and stepping up to fulfill those needs for yourself.
It means to take a moment every day to appreciate what you're doing right.
It means to take a moment every day to be grateful for the things you have in life.

If you can do this every day, then you have come far with developing a better relationship with your self.

i originally wish i could realistically do this within my lifetime

not in my experience, I never joined any of those
I just don't like massive communities outside of anonymous ones like Jow Forums
Too many e-celebs and e-celeb-wannabes, very little discussion of meaning, incredibly depersonalizing and cliquey

Best skype groups were those of small tight knit communities of 15-20 people or less, and that's the same way it is for discord for myself.
Probably just a matter of personal preference though

Are you willing to do what it takes to be happy?

if i knew what that was i'd give it a shot

Seek the ishaya monks of The Bright Path.
They taught me how to be happy.
It worked more than anything else I've tried.

oh. so this was your plan all along.

Text because jannies are gay

Right? It was horrible not being able to talk to strangers for worrying that they'd get your IP address and fuck up your shit.
Discord is:
>prettier
>safer: no one's gonna find info about you unless you tell them

But:
>boo hoo they steal your data
Who doesn't? By having a Google Account you've already sold your soul to the big corps.
Just enjoy the ride, amirite?

>not using ventrillo

Discord servers feel like kids who got bullied in highschool finally get to feel special by having little cliques. It's garbage joining established servers

>have server
>occasionally release invite code
>vet new joiners - ban traps and uwu look at meeee faggot
>kick those who are inactive
>Foster a culture of banter and interaction
>result: close-knit comfy server with the lads, free of fagposting and drama

>said community becomes a circlejerk with nothing actually holding people in the server besides the obligation to be active to not get kicked

Attached: 1536738037179.jpg (400x400, 19K)

stop joining shitty servers?

>Discord is:
>prettier
While you are absolutely correct, is this really good criteria? Their UX (as in, how menus are structures etc.) is actually inferior (no way to quote/reply to messages, can't press UP multiple times to edit older messages, etc)
>safer: no one's gonna find info about you unless you tell them
Although Skype is retarded for giving your IP right away, it's not hard to get someone's info on Discord either. You can easily:
- send a link they click, boom IP saved
- lookup their username in leaked DBs, to find everything (email, passwords, real names, etc...)
...by the way, if you think a hidden channel (one you need a role to view (or a per-person bypass)) is safe, no it's not... anyone in the server can see:
- name
- category it belongs to
- topic (so if you put a secret password in there, you're fucked)
- last message ID (and time)
- you can see people typing
- and all other data, except the content of messages posted there

>Who doesn't? By having a Google Account you've already sold your soul to the big corps.
How ignorant. You definitely have a chance to stay out of it. Not giving all your private communications to a shady entity funded by DATA HARVESTING COMPANIES is a very good one.

There are very few good ones - the cost of getting all my data harvested is not worth it to me.

That'll devolve to just a shitposting community and die out rather fast.

>we split up into multiple
What does that even mean???? Splintering is a telltale sign of death, user.

Discord is fine if you actually use it for its original purpose, ie actually using it for game voice chat and organizing stuff for games

Everybody that uses discord gets the rope

>zoomers don't know what irc is
>boomers got distracted by yuppie irc clone #137 and stopped using it
bad feel

This user gets it. IRC is based and has better communities.

this is literally the answer, just because faggots on r9k keep making dumb anime discords doesn't mean the entire thing is bad

its 2018 IRC has an ugly unititive UI normies dont want to learn 50 different / actions

5 types of people on discord
>depressed NEETs
>edgy 4channer type who is needlessly combative all the time (probably schizoid)
>"did I mention I'm a girl"
>Suicidal/attention whoring traps
>stormfags
Why does this app blow so much?

Discord is utterly redundant on Jow Forums and it should only exist on /soc/.

>go to internet community
>immediately make community-within-community offsite
>spam it to shit here
>cliquey drama shit inevitably occurs and spills onto the board
>discordteens

Attached: zoomer1.jpg (953x451, 35K)

i don't know what it is about discord but holy shit it attracts the cringiest zoomer faggots. they ate that shit right up. hell even some no-life boomers joined in. it's amazing really.

I also dislike discord but its become the go to platform so what can you do?
There used to be a really comfy teamspeak server I went on with out 15 people but its dead now and everyone migrated to discord because servers are free which killed the community. I really liked how simple and clean teamspeak was. Discord has too much crap like image spam, bots and eemojiees.
I havent really found an online home since then. Ive just floated between servers and had dms with a few people.
I couldnt give a shit about my privacy though. Im young enough that I just assume anything I ever post online can be collected and monitored by someone if they want it.

apart from commonality, all playing similar vidya, and occasionally meeting IRL

>people who dedicate their lives to helping other people have bills to pay
>this makes them bad people and invalidate their teaching
ok buddy

not what i said at all but alright
