More that you cannot understand the Early Church without reading the Fathers, in my opinion. You'll get a lot of prots saying the Catholic Church invented certain teachings, but reading the Fathers shows that what the Church teaches has always been believed (e.g Mass is mentioned by Justin Martyr, infant baptism is debated but supported in the early church, real presence is believed but I cnanot remember who wrote about it, maybe Justin again).
