They were never as prominent on the internet until past 2012.

I strongly believe that the importing of fringe political product to the internet was a method of division to cripple any citizen claim to power via technology. That outrage that drove those moments was isolated and then turned into a product to be sold back to everyone.

I also believe the rise of early, unorganized internet activism, and the raw product that is technological development being uncontrolled was something that brought the old machinations of division to the internet in full force, from all the same old places (old media usually being behind new clickbait media etc within atleast two money-hops)
