Basically, we can't be sure if there is a continuous "you" that persists throughout time. It feels like there is, but that might just be an illusion. It could be that "you" only persist for a split second, and you a minute in the future is an entirely different consciousness. It's also possible that every time you sleep you die, and a new consciousness wakes up in your body thinking it's you, and we would have no way of knowing.

So what? We wouldn't believe we had successfully transferred consciousness to an external medium unless it successfully duplicated the illusion. In fact, that will probably be how we specifically define success. So if all we do is duplicate the current illusion, we won't have made our situation any worse. If I'm that first mover, as soon as I succeed, I now own the universe - and the only threat to me are the people behind me in line. So I quite naturally would immediately move to neutralize that threat. By wiping you out, or reducing you to a state where you can't threaten me.

Maybe a benevolent AI wouldn't do that. But I sure as fuck would. Game theory demands it, and the literal universe is the stakes. And since I would reach that conclusion, I have to assume that others would too.

Hence the first mover problem. I need to be the first mover, in order to be safe and in order to realize the benefit being dangled here. But if I was the type of person who would have the balls to be the first mover, I probably wouldn't be posting here.

Well, yes. Please note that I did say that this is a difficult thing to hope for. It's only worth doing if you're the first mover, and I concede that this is very unlikely. In fact, that was my whole point.

Although I will say that creating an AI that then "upgrades" the rest of us only moves the problem slightly, and makes it a "first human mover" problem. Because if I'm the first person in line, the very first thing I should do with my new abilities (if I'm wise) is destroy the AI. It's a competitor, but if it's under enough control that we trust it to upgrade the rest of us it's a nerfed competitor, so I can probably destroy it. If I don't do that, there are X billion humans behind me in line, any one of which might make the decision to go all Von Neumann on the rest of us.

That's necessarily sort of nebulous, because one thing that makes the Singularity a singularity is the fact that we can't see past it with any certainty. Superintelligence with the ability to self-augment that intelligence creates a runaway intelligence loop, and we're simply not able to predict what such an entity will be able to do.
