Perhaps you should have joined the guard in a combat role instead... then join up full time if/when things kick off again (or indeed just go on tour with the guard unit you join, doing actual soldiering rather than fixing vehicles)

you'll find there can be a lot of waiting around, even on operations... I spent plenty of time as an infantry soldier sat in a portacabin on an airfield in Iraq ready to run out to a helicopter... sometimes we got crashed out, other times we'd spend 12 hours up there watching DVDs and playing on a PS2...

Only real benefit of the FFL, is going to war, getting French citizenship, having purpose, or having a place to stay once you're a old fag.
