In my case, whether it be studies/career or getting a GF, I'm just lazy. With the former, I used to care about study, but since the HS I attended was easy and a quite peaceful place close to my home, I didn't bother in transferring to a better, more demanding school.
With the latter, I didn't have friends back then, but didn't have problems with my family, nothing that would force me to go out an socialize. Time passed and problems arisen, everything was a lie. I was conditioned to be a failure but didn't notice it in time to get some sort of professional help and advice.
Now I'm too old to care. I do have friends, but no GF. I don't know if I really want a GF either, because most women have their own set of issues, and the last thing I need is more problematic people in my life.
