Work normally for the first 2 months, just dedicate enough time everyday to this essay, it shouldnt be so much that it bothers you, and honestly the 3 last months are just for adjustments, corrections and stuff like that, but the core of the essay should be done by then

What's it about? If it's anything you can cite long-winded sources with then it'll practically write itself. Nothing like paragraph long quotes to beef up a paper.
Regardless, 20k isn't that much once you actually start writing. Just get started and fill/pad it in later if you need to.
