the more background knowledge a person has, the easier it is for them to learn and understand new things ("oh, this makes sense because it's similar in structure to that other thing i learned a while back").
if you're up for it, i'd suggest watching khan academy's math videos (or any other math video maker who explains math concepts on a whiteboard) from the absolute basics. that logical foundation will really come in handy for all kinds of topics.
