5k refers to the screen. My screen is 5120x2880. The iMac with these screens starts at $1500. A 5k screen by itself starts around $1200-$1300.
You can make a computer that's about as powerful for around the same price, but I'd rather have the official hardware running the OS I was going to use regardless.

The one time I tried it worked decent enough, other than continuity. Getting it installed and working properly was annoying, but everything else worked, even restoring from a backup that was made on my actual Mac.
