I basically see Jow Forums as a really hostile but fun version of Toastmasters. I tend to post on this board a lot. It was my home a long time ago too, back before Moot killed it. On any given day, I've replied to approximately 1/3rd of the threads on Jow Forums. I've always felt closely connected to the kinds of people that post on Jow Forums for some reason.

Jow Forums has made me more argumentative and contrarian, but also much better at communicating and understanding my audience. Every board has a different culture, a different expected level of "expertise" in the subject, a different set of memes and image macros, etc. It takes some amount of savvy and skill to engage a specific Jow Forums board's community and consistently get a positive response, and once you've learned how to do that, you're on your way to becoming an effective "politician". You learn how to cover ALL your bases when you put forward any communication or ask for anything, because if you don't, some autistic, malicious fuck WILL tear apart your reply over a typo, an image that's too big or too small, an imperfectly quoted phrase, or any action from autocorrect. It's annoying, but becoming sharp in this area is GREAT for work - presenting a cool outer shell and playing office politics is a breeze after years of contending with groups of angry, determined Jow Forums shitposters.
