Yes, and yes. However, even with the current amount of towns and a player count I've lost count of, there's barely a dent in the resources. Maybe less than 1% have been used so far.

Yes, but it's not really splitting. Towny and factions both have their place, and people who don't want to play towny just won't play, and people who don't want to play factions won't play. They both have their place.

all the terrain is flat and boring, mob spawns are fucked, some massive places are uninhabitable outside of gimmickss (artic, desert)

The terrain is flatter in some areas than others, there are mountains. Mob spawns are vanilla. Most places on the map are totally habitable. No idea what you're talking about.

you can't live in Greenland or the sahara without teleporting/trading elsewhere for resources. mobs don't spawn in some areas at all, like Greenland. most "mountains" are only like 15 blocks tall

Yes, but those uninhabitable areas are a small portion of the map, and it's not really that hard to travel a couple k to get some trees or other shit. Mobs are vanilla, so if the biome is a tundra, only mobs that spawn in a tundra will spawn. I agree, mountains aren't really impressive, but 15 blocks is hyperbole.

North/East Canada is 100% livable and mobs are fine there, I just double checked. Trees also exist there. There are more places in the world than Greenland, Sahara, the poles and Europe.
