What are some dark, psychological, sad, philosphical and high quality narrative anime's and films you guys love:

Now and then, here and there was pretty alright. Normies say it's fucked up but it really wasn't that bad.
Nicholas Hall
It's not fucked up, just dark for anime standards.

OP here
Thanks for the suggestions so far
To clarify, SAO didn't appeal at first but I got into it around the 5th episode, I thin k that's when all his new and naive friends just outright die and I choked.
I kept watching from that point and took all the cutesy stuff with a pinch of salt. I let fanservice fly over my head, especially when I know the story is pretty good and I just want to escape.

Most works like that never make it as an anime, or if they do are heavily censored.
The following mangas will be up your alley: Good choices: >Bokurano: Ours (The anime is altered to make it much happier) >20th Century Boys (written by the guy who made monster)
If you want more: >Narutaru (The anime stopped airing because the series gets too messed up, it is from the same author as bokurano but way bleaker and more fucked. It has no meaningful philosophy like Bokurano though.) >Oyasumi Punpun >Homunculus >Freesia >Himizu (Arguably the most nihilistic manga)
Watch these If you must have an anime and you just want to be sad: >anything by Makoto Shinkai >Colorful >Anohana >Your lie in april
Also >SAO >Death Note >Black Butler None of these are dark, psychological, sad, or philosophical.

Princess Tutu is my favorite anime and also the thematically deepest i've seen.
The anime only covers practically just the first chapter of the manga.... The manga is a complete story and is worth it. The anime ended before it even started.
