Imagine if the entire universe had no outer space, no planets, and no stars. The entire universe would simply be one giant apartment block like this that stretches up and down so far that it could be infinite.
The first few hundred or so floors up and down would be filled with people's living spaces, communal rooms, and other shit like that, with more crowding near the middle. On the edge floors, the paint would be flaking off and there would be some weirdos and drug users, like the slums of a city. Past the limits of the community, for at least many thousands of floors on either end there would be abandoned floors, looking much like the inside an old abandoned building. Occasional remnants of human activity, like litter, can be found.
It would be comfy and everybody would be part of a greater family. But at the same time, the elevator, which has no floor buttons but rather only buttons for up down open and close, can keep going and going and going up or down..and those few crazy people who decided to venture far away enough either never return or gave up and got too scared after going into the elevator for tens of thousands of floors. Maybe there's more communities millions of floors upwards? Maybe it's a paradise, or it could be a nightmare full of unimaginable horrors. Or perhaps even a bottom floor or roof, billions upon billions of floors away from your community.

Started my ascension last week. I left the boundaries of my safe home almost 200 floors ago with no direction or supplies. Some traveling strangers have been kind enough to share food and shelter, but have warned me about the upper levels. The R-9000 megacorp reach ends at about floor 808 where the last WorldGate stands. Anything beyond that are ruins of ancient civilizations, bandits and criminal organizations, monsters, and adventurers like myself.
So far the journey has been fun. Meeting the many cultures or so called /generals/ has been a thrill.
