Honestly, Starting Strength without power cleans is a solid novice program:
MWF
Squat 3x5
Bench/Press 3x5
Deadlift 1x5
Chin-ups
The above plus some walking and a calorie control is all most people need to be strong.

power cleaning is one of the best exercises for athleticism and will help all your other lifts
They are funl and they are great for your upper back and coordination.

Box jumps and other forms of plyometrics (weighted or otherwise) are superior to olympic lifts for the purpose of training explosive triple extension in novice lifters. Because they don't have to learn a technically complex movement and can just you know jump to a box/do a broad jump.
