But if you mean ruined what YOU know of the internet that probably happened around the late 2000s. This has been talked about to death so I'lll just give the bullet points.
Corporations saw how much money there was to be made and sterilized everything to cater to advertisers.
Everything got consolidated. Most people use 5 or so websites that everyone else uses instead of everyone using a ton of different smaller websites dedicated to niche topics.
The rise of smartphones is probably the biggest factor though and the thing most people will blame. Having to actually be at your house sitting at the computer to post some stupid bullshit was definitely a good deterrent. I think the average post quality on this board would increase dramatically if there was a way to stop phoneposting.

in a wierd way I find it kind of depressing how far the internet has degraded itself and the people on it.
