I like it, google says you can burn around 20 cal a minute and its easy to program sets and rests like lifting
Superb cardio, but you got to go hard when doing it.

You can jump just as well without a stupid rope....
Very good for cardio, and incredible for martial arts. You can jump, double under, sprint, cross etc. so it's superior to just jumping in place, since as one user said it also improves coordination as well as works out your arms a bit. It absolutely destroys calves if you do enough. Can't recommend it enough.

Forgot to say it's good gor both LISS and HIIT.
Look up some videos on youtube for techniques and ideas. If you've never skipped regularly it might take a few workouts to get used to the movements. It's also pretty fun, for me at least, and since you're skipping in place you can watch TV or something during, but I wouldn't recommend it (tripping, hitting yourself with the rope etc.).
