sociopaths/psychopaths are just normal people living in a different reality, one at the same time just as big as any empaths but at the same time infinitely smaller, they can still make their own moral codes they see as being just, and have deep and emotional connections with other people, it's just that they're like soldiers in the field, every moment they feel like they could get pounced on, and act and think according to that. It's not a self aware kind of defensive paranoia, just one that seems to be integral to them, their life and the world, and as any rational being in their own world, they take it to the most efficient and effective state that they can and act in ways that put on an offensive defense, things like lying, manipulating, acting. They want to keep the things around them in check, and that's it, really the same as anyone else just a bit wonky to one side, although wonky enough that you should keep our wits about you and expect to have to think like them when you're interacting.

I went to high school with a kid who was later diagnosed with ASPD. He was incredibly charming in a superficial way. He had a sense of humor and was almost like the class clown. Everyone liked him and he came from a pretty nice family, too.

Six years after graduation, I saw his face in the local paper after he beat his girlfriend almost to death. She ended up in a wheelchair for a year. I knew that his mother had an accident where she fell down some stairs and broke her back but the newspaper articlerevealed that it came out in court that he had shoved his mother down the stairs, causing her to break her back. I do remember him talking about how much he hated his mother and didn't feel bad for her after her accident. He genuinely seemed to have no remorse.

I agree. The FBI criminal psychologist who labeled him a psychopath said that he "realized Eric was a psychopath when he saw that he had a Machiavellian streak" from reading his journal entry where he said he wasn't sorry for stealing computer equipment from that van. That's pretty lazy on his part. A psychopath wouldn't have cried during the basement tapes, which Eric did. He was thinking of his family and how much he didn't want to hurt them. He also talked about how much he loved his father, who he said was the greatest guy in the world.
