Akihabara is based but you soon see how depressing it is; you eventually realize that all the girls in maid costumes aren't there for fun, they're there to pay bills. That or be prostitutes on the low.
Tokyo is a great city but too many people put Akiba as its crown jewel. If you want that same nightlife feel i would try Shibuya or Shinjuku desu, or the izakayas in the less crowded wards.
