Mandarin is one of the hardest languages to learn. It does however, follow subject-verb-object like English does, and tenses are practically nonexistent, so at least there's a small trade-off in having to wrap your brain around a new grammar structure. Mandarin is the dominant language on the mainland, Taiwan, and Singapore. The CCP has been pursuing an active policy of enforcing Mandarin over regional languages for the better part of 50 years.
