I live in BC, Canada. I was just kicked out of college and fired from my apprenticeship, so I have to go do a wages slave job for like $10 USD/hour for a year to pay my debts off. Thing is, I can't keep eating my parents food anymore. I have gained 25 kg since moving back in with them 8 years ago, and I just can't keep it off. Doesn't matter what I do, because if I restrict myself to the healthful part of their groceries, I run out of food in less than a week. Up until now, I have been unable to afford my own food because of school. For the first time in like 8 years, I will be buying my own groceries and keeping them in a separate fridge. Intermittent fasting on their pantry is fucking torture because almost all of the shit they eat is high glycemic index garbage. I've tried every diet, and I just can't do it without paying my own food bill.
How do I eat healthily on $500 CAD per month? That's $375 USD or €340. Groceries are expensive in Canada. In fact, they're so expensive that I almost never buy them, hence the obesity.

When the average cost of groceries in Canada for 2 people is $400 at the absolute minimum buying garbage food, gas prices are $5.00/gallon, sales tax alone is at 13%, income tax is at 21-26% and property taxes are forever going up. Our dollar is worth 75¢ USD, Our provincial and federal government's are sabatoging any attempt to create infrastructure for our natural resources, cutting tax breaks, raising minimum wage so high that small businesses can't compete and close their doors.

That's what I basically do in America. Skip the veggies there's very little nutrients in them compared to the cost. I can eat 3oz of beef liver and get 10x more protein from it than a whole bag of broccoli. That's not even considering micros which also blow it away. You can get by just fine as long as you buy food only when it's on sale, buy in bulk and you should be good. Get Flipp on your phone to see which shop has the cheapest price for what you want to buy. Also, don't buy fruits it's a delicacy you can afford if you don't live off minimum wage.
If you don't have a job that pays well in the city move out to the suburbs, no reason to pay 2x the price for housing.
For phone services and internet look into companies other than Bell, Rogers, Telus and friends. CRTC mandated that every big company offer a cheaper alternative to telecom so you have things like Lucky Mobile and Fizz who offer cheap prices although with a bit less reliability. What I have right now is 25$/month for 2gb of data and unlimited calls/text. Internet prices have also gone down but you have to actually call up your provider to make the changes otherwise you're stuck with shitty prices.

I have a few buddies down in the U.S that have given me advice. I have experience in a high paying job on the railroad that the northern U.S is desperate for, I could take a job at any of the 5+ class 1 railroads in the U.S tomorrow not to mention the lesser railroads but they pay less. I own a home here so I'd have enough money to purchase a home wherever I end up settling. So I'd have a secure, high paying job off the bat and I don't have a criminal record at all. I live so close to the U.S that I'm more ingrained with that culture than I am my own. I don't think it would be too hard to eventually get citizenship for myself, although I'm in a rare position. Most people do not have these luxuries.

Basically if you don't have a skilled trade, degree or something or are basically a superstar in your field it's hard to get sponsored for a green card. My situation is unique since I have 10+ years of highly skilled work in my field on the railroad and a degree in mech eng that the U.S is desperate for, I most likely could get an EB-2 green card and since I'm already a cad citizen my petition for the visa wouldnt be backlogged and I'd get approved pretty fast, then get a sponsorship via my employer for permanent residency.
