500 pushups is actually pretty close to the numbers done in my local county jail where free weights are banned. Basically, split between 2 one-hour workouts:

>400-800 is the golden zone - you're getting in enough volume but you're still fresh enough to fight
>800+ is only done when you just bet your canteen that you can do more reps than somebody else
Of course everybody seemed to really zero in on JUST push-ups with half-rep RoM, when there were a few dip and pull-up bars. The people who knew what they were doing were able to get some crazy gains, walking out like Eugene Sandow but with pecs. This was a closed unit too, the chance that anybody could get any steroids in there was laughably slim - in 4 months, there were literally only 2 times that fun drugs were even available and most people just drank obscene amounts of coffee or stole other people's seroquel to get "high."
Tbh, my pecs were better walking out of there doing 600 pushups 2 days a week and then 400/400 pushups and dips on chicken day then they are now. It's just the perfect storm of volume, intensity, dirty bulking, and resting whenever the fuck you want.

Wouldn't this take forever with pullups? I can do ~7 pullups in my first set. In subsequent sets, I can only do 1 or 2. How am I supposed to do another 63 without being there all day?
Ex-detainee, I was never convicted so I can pass background checks. I was just held without bail for 4 months because my state is retarded.
It's true in some jails that they actively restrict the amount of calories they give you. I know that the county where I live now only gives its detainees and inmates 1600kcal worth of food per day to keep them from getting strong and rioting.
At the jail I was at, we got about 2000kcal worth of food per day.

Once you got some food (didn't matter how much,) you threw in for a mix/mofungo. Basically, a giant mishmash of whatever everybody could find. The mix I threw in for usually had ramen, rice, chili, queso, chips, tuna (chicken when you could get it,) and pickles. I did the math once and it was around 800-2000kcal depending on which group you threw in with. Plus if you had canteen or trade goods, you were trading part of it away to get your hands on more oatmeal, peanut butter, or tuna. Then after the mix, you probably had a candy bar or two if you were rich.
Like I said, dirty bulking. It's jail, but it's American jail.

the initial challenge of doing the exercise to failure is just to find the ideal number to set as a benchmark which you can then use to multiply and find a decent number of reps to challenge you individually. They are not in one set, you just need to reach the total number of reps without resting more than 90 seconds, that does not mean maxing out in every set

I'm not that guy. Accused of a domestic. My state goes apeshit over domestics after a VERY high profile murder case where the son of a sports figure got out on bail and then immediately killed his wife. Anybody accused of one without good connections in the legal system automatically gets held for 4 months without bail. If you're super unlucky, you'll get held without bail right up until the day of the trial which can literally be years if you're facing felony charges related to the domestic and the indictment takes longer than usual.

The whole 10-12 reps is actually not about "counting". Done properly (slow and deliberate with good form), these numbers will put you under load for correct amount of time. Thus 10-12 is better than 5-8. Unfortunately it is seldom done correctly, people just half ass it and count to 10.

there is an upper limit to volume. I think unless you've been specifically training for very high pushup volume you'd eventually hit a point, maybe a couple hundred in, where your arms turn into complete spaghetti and you can't push yourself up for even one or two reps. Spacing out your sets will prolong this but it's not going to make your max infinite, your body is still going to remember that it's already done 270 pushups today.
