Most heights are a little inflated (Peck was 6’2 and Cary Grant a 6 footer, for starters). But overall yes, Hollywood celebrities were taller back in the day. This is actually easy if we’re just talking about actors. Old time male movie stars were valued for their face, charisma, and height. With the sexual revolution of the 60s, men started being sexually objectified the same as women and more importance was placed on their bodies. This didn’t really take off until the internet age though but now even the nerdiest of male leads needs to be in great shape. It probably has a lot to do with the mainstream acceptance of homos too. Anyways, tall men simply have a much harder time building impressive physiques compared to short. So we’re seeing more short men these days because they look better naked, especially when you can’t tell their height due to camera tricks. For a prime example look at James Bond. Every bond before Craig was 6’1 or above and dyel (yes even Connory). Now we have Craig who’s greatest asset is being waxed and roided (if he had the body of brosnan or dalton he would not have the role) and his most iconic scene in any of the movies is his coming out of the surf naked in an homage to a Bond girl from a previous film.

two things. aside from jews being shorter it's also that actors lie about their height and this was a lot worse in the past. the more "high def" everything gets the less you can get away with lying about things like height so nowadays actors only lie 1-2 inches whereas back in the day they went ham and gave themselves an extra 3-4.
