for me, novels are the best in delivering escapism.
any anons with some good recommendations?

What sort of novels do you read user? And do you self insert as the character? I prefer to do CYOA so i can write my own story about my own character going on adventures plus it means i can make the story never ending

It's sad knowing that we were born too early to explore new planets and discover new wildlife and flora

Attached: images (5).jpg (738x415, 61K)

yeh its pretty upsetting that we cant go on adventures to new places anymore without coming into contact with people on a damn hike

Do these pictures make you feel like adventure user?

Attached: 3i3fjgukt4u21.jpg (960x513, 45K)

Some mountains in South Italy.

I'd consider crossing the Atlantic in a garish tin can through U-boat infested waters more of a adventure than castle on a hill #53

Tfw I'm messaging someone as we speak about getting into my dream job of providing medical support to expeditions into the Himalayas or the Amazon.
I might not live in an age where I can spend my life discovering new lands but I might just be able to get paid to discover lands that are new to me.

i used to love CYOA threads when they were common

ok no need to be rude i was asking genuinely cmon dude i was interested. And just saying you could do anything like go in a ship across a fantasy ocean filled with sea monsters so idk why youd want to cross something thats already discovered like the atlantic
Thats great dude!! I hope you get it !
Im trying to make threads like that more common i had a cyoa thread the other day up for a day or two.

come build megaprojects in mc w/ me

If you were on a Q ship, or one of the convoy escorts sure. Otherwise besides the small chance that you get blown the fuck out with no warning it would be pretty normal for a merchant mariner.

This world was a mistake

id love to user but im not very creative at minecraft building i can only ever build medieval style.
Yes and no. Yes because we can never adventure but no cause if this world didnt exist we wouldnt be able to use our imaginations.

Not the guy you replied to, but this is honestly a really really dumb thing to say man. It honestly completely misses the point of romanticism. It's not just the unknown, it's the raw emotion that comes with it. The Caribbean, the Indian Ocean, the American West were all well known and well charted, but they still had piracy and banditry. It was actually because they were well developed that they had that. And we romanticize the shit out of that today People love pirates and cowboys, because of that wild raw emotion. That feeling of freedom, opportunity and danger. Consider things like Porco Rosso, set in the Adriatic sea in the late 1920s, or Crimson Skies, set in an alternate history USA around 1930s or so. Both deal with the same thing: Air Piracy. And the Adriatic is entirely charted, it's been traversed since ancient times after all, and by 1930s North America was also fully charted, but nonetheless the settings still have that sense of romance to them, that wild emotion. Or even take something like Around the World in 80 days. Fogg never really goes to the unknown. He takes trains, he takes elephants, he takes weird snow sleds, he take ships. He stops in developed towns. But he still has an incredible adventure. At one point, he fears his ship is too slow, so he buys the whole damn thing and then orders everything that isn't essential to keep it afloat and going to be torn apart and fed to the boiler to increase speed. And he sees things that are, to him, new and exciting. That's the adventure. It doesn't matter where you go, just what you see and what you experience.

Ran out of space.
Just last season, there was an anime about air piracy. It was set in a desert, like the one in Utah, Arizona, New Mexico. Just a dry barren wasteland as far as the eye can see. There are few towns dotting the landscape, and a handful of big cities, which aren't really all that unusual. They look like a regular city you might have seen in the 1940s. The world itself was nothing spectacular. But the story itself was amazing. It was real fun. Because even though it was a barren desert, things were still happening. People were living their lives, and clashing with others for their desires. There was piracy, treachery, plotting, rivalry, everything. Emotion to it. And that changed the whole thing from just pilots fucking about in the sky, to something with real meaning. That's what made it great. It didn't need alien landscapes, it didn't need monsters, it didn't need magic everywhere. It had emotion. I guess that's what /v/ calls "soul".

The size limit on this board makes it really annoying because the best cyoas are larger than 2mb

Attached: Bazaar.jpg (1920x753, 519K)

And as a final thing, there really were sea monsters in the Atlantic and the Pacific at the time. Sea monsters far scarier than any kraken, or leviathan, or whatever. There were huge battleships raiding the Atlantic. Submarines patrolling every single sea. Carriers terrorizing the Pacific. Groups of destroyers braving the submarines, escorting their charges. Warships are honestly full of that kind of romanticism. Battleships were the ultimate symbol of the strength of countries, and the physical manifestation of the pride of nations. Consider stories like that of Warspite, who fought in WWI during the biggest engagement between capital ships ever, and alone held off the entire German fleet while the rest of the Royal Navy retreated, suffering damage to her steering gear, and turret number 3, among other things, only to survive and fight again in WWII, where she once again distinguished herself. Or Tirpitz, known as the Lonely Queen of the North, who struck fear into the Royal Navy with her mere presence. Yamato and her sister Musashi, the two largest battleships ever built, the physical embodiment of the pride and ambition of the Japanese Empire, named after the Island itself. And that's just the big ones. You have little ships like Yukikaze, who survived so much against all odds. The tale of Taffy 3, who faced incredible odds but still managed to fight off the Japanese. Kormorant, who through clever trickery managed to sink a superior foe. The Story of HMS Venturer, who sank a U boat while they were both submerged, the only time it has ever happened. The battle of Savo Island. There is undeniably a hell of a lot of romanticism to naval warfare, and to write it off as mundane is honestly really dumb man. I've played fantasy RPG games before, but none of them have ever matched the absolute fun that was naval wargaming, and airplane wargaming, even with my shitty miniatures. It's a shame it's not popular at all.

Yeh its annoying oh well we can just link to em

more interiors

Attached: 1557338246477.jpg (706x1000, 194K)

Part of it is that it's very hard to write a story that can match historical stuff since it's making up things vs simply recording them, there's no plot armour in history...

Also there the artist vs engineer thing on the visual aspects. So often fantasy stuff ends up looking like not very functional caricatures while the real stuff simply was supposed to keep you alive and kill the enemy

If the image took place in a anime... There'd be more swords, mechas and women

Attached: Japanese Special Naval Landing Forces with gas masks and rubber gloves during a chemical attack, Bat (1200x955, 197K)

Yeh its hard cause fantasy is so easy to write whatever.

>Part of it is that it's very hard to write a story that can match historical stuff since it's making up things vs simply recording them, there's no plot armour in history...
There really are some stories that lend themselves to stories, which is why some have been made into films or novels. Off the top of my head, you have IJN Yukikaze, a Kagerou class destroyer that saw extensive service, but still survived the entire war. Her captain wrote a book on his experiences aboard her, and how she never sank.
You have Enterprise, also known as Big E, or Lucky E, who at one point was the only US carrier in the Pacific, against a bunch of jap ones. She too participated in many major battles and survived the entire thing. History channel made a whole series recounting her story, and it's an incredible one.
There's Das Boot, which is about a U boat crew and all the hardships it entailed.
There was even a Nicolas Cage movie about the Indianapolis.
There was also the anime Hai Furi, or High School Fleet, which despite being about little girls commanding a destroyer, and not being historical, still had some exciting moments, like the part where they alone engage a Kongo class battleship, and have to use clever navigating, quick maneuvering and carefully aimed torpedoes to make it away alive.
You also have movies about the Memphis Belle, and Fury, which was about a tank crew, so it's not like it's impossible to make gripping stories about these things.
>Also there the artist vs engineer thing on the visual aspects.
Yeah, and that really sucks in my opinion. The thing I hate the most about the majority of fantasy games and shows are that all the weapons and armors and such look so retarded. Personally I really appreciate all the thought that went into the real things. Everything was carefully done and had some purpose, so to just disregard it completely really kills it for me. It's not like the real things aren't cool as fuck on their own.

I take trips on back roads occasionally, during the day it's absolutely beautiful, at night, horribly terrifying.
But there are things to be explored at night that won't be seen any other way

Take a nightwalk/drive alone and it won't be long until if feels like you're running from something instead of going somewhere.

Music helps set the mood too, usually if I'm driving I'll put on some Tool or something. But when the song hits, I hit the pedal I'm start frantically checking my mirrors

I can't indulge in fantasy for too long or I begin having a crisis and regress to my young autistic self who hadn't yet accepted reality.

Attached: 1422751973505 (sub 2mb).jpg (3100x2046, 1.29M)

Not very adventury But if it pumps you up you rock user!
ahh well not accepting reality is a big issue user

Two things for me. Looking at pictures from a hundred years ago or more, of things being built, and just trying to imagine how different it would have been, and how it's changed. The other is post-apocalypse. Not the aftermath, but how things ended and living through it, like Horizon Zero Dawn, or Days Gone. It always makes me crave more backstory about it, and I'd sink countless hours into trying to find out what it was like the day the world ended.

i was gonna buy days gone cause my local vidya store has it on sale. Worth for an user who just loves apocalypse?

This, that's my unrealistic dream

>young autistic self who hadn't yet accepted reality.
I feel that one pretty hard, m8. Between maybe 18 and 24, I hadn't really accepted reality either and lived in a kind of bizarre pretend world. It was a really bad time for me and the fantasy world did me a lot of harm, so I can't indulge too much either or I as well start to regress back into that place.

Attached: 2017-03-24 23.14.25.png (539x664, 554K)

Yup, you get it user.

Attached: 67001b5e69d89dc1e58434c834d9efa1.jpg (1920x1080, 554K)

I'd say so. It took a few hours for it to grow on me, but now it's the current staple in my vidya. Missions get slightly repetitive, but there are good apocalyptic scenes and plenty of actual story during the missions. And it's actually one game I prefer to travel in rather than fast travel

Oh shoot, I just remembered, back when I was living at my parents' I used to just leave the house to sit alone at the park or even the college library (didn't attend college). I'd come home and make up a story to tell my parents about how I met some people or saw a friend who in reality I hadn't seen since highschool.

I used to be full isolation, zero social contact with anyone, except my family when I lived with my parents, to the extent where my job felt like a super social activity because I said "hi" when I clocked in and occasionally a supervisor would tell me to do something.
