It used to be somewhat difficult to find an out-of-print book in the United States, or a previous edition of an in-print book. To find one, you'd have to poke around at yard sales and in used book stores until you found it.

Then the Amazon Marketplace got started and anyone who had a bunch of old books could list them there, if they wanted to. And people starting creating and uploading entire databases of old and used books and uploading them to Amazon.

Having all those books suddenly available in one place overwhelmed the available demand, and the price for many old and used books in the Amazon Marketplace was driven down to 1 cent. That was good if you wanted to BUY an old or used book, but not so good if you wanted to SELL one.

Every once in a while, some dumb girl would walk into your store and buy one of your old books and would give you a few bucks for it.
