I've been in the Indianapolis Music Scene since I was in HS, even though I couldn't make music to save my life (I could maybe perform but that's a different story entirely). The only reason I'm involved is because I have a couple friends who make music, and SOMEHOW every single person in that scene is distantly friends with every single other person in that scene.
My joint is filmmaking but unsurprisingly there's almost NO filmmaking community in Indianapolis what-so-fucking-ever.

Music for me is an emotional or energetic experience as I call it. I get some kind of motivation and good feeling in my brain when I listen to non lyrical music that contains harmonic variety and a stable amount of chromaticism.
But classical music is not boring at all. Maybe for you it is but for me, it was a life changing experience. My brain is different from yours I guess.
Also, I play the piano so maybe that is why I enjoy music so much.
Only music I autistically obsess over is touhou themes (originals, arranges, some fan-made). Since they're arranged in 10000 ways in almost every genre you could think of, it's pretty much guaranteed that you'll find at least a few that fit whatever mood you happen to be in at the time.
I'm not really into music with lyrics, since they take the piece in a set direction that may not fit really well with your thoughts/mood. It's like reducing 4D -> 3D. However, having a set direction can be a good thing, as long the person writing the lyrics paints an interesting picture (it depends how well it fits with your mood, or how much you want it to fit with the mood. You could use it to try to change your mood as well). However, that is not the case for the overwhelming majority of the popular songs I've heard.

I don't think someone can have listening to music 24/7 as their only hobby. Maybe they say that as a generic response to this question since they don't want to tell you what they do in their free time. Either way, saying that some people doing an activity on their own that literally doesn't affect anyone should die in a fire is pure stupid. They could call you a "freak with a broken brain who can't even enjoy music and misses a big part of the living experience, to the point where you might as well kill yourself" and you would have no reason to complain about it as it is equivalent to what you have said to them. Well, I'm not telling you how to live your life, but if you seek happiness or even just peace, then try viewing everything from as many perspectives as you can.
