i have a trackball that i use sometimes when i get sick and tired of using a mouse, but in general for browing i use vimium anyways so it doesnt really matter.
the tracking works just fine on this shitty whatever-the-fuck-that-is i have on my desk, so i dont really mind...

The true good alternative to discord is going to be different than discord, because discord is inherently designed to restrict and remove the users freedoms. Also, having all of these features in the same place controlled by the same people is dangerous. the solution is federation or decentralisation. Both in the applications structure and the application itself. So, in my opinion the solution is a combination of programs that are eaither decentralised by nature, or have the ability to easily deploy a server so that you can host your own backed.

IRC or XMPP. I have been using IRC forever, since the 90s, and its still great for text only conversations. I recently started using XMPP, and I can see why people might like it more, it has more modern features and supports OMEMO and PGP e2e encryption. There are lots of good IRC clients, for terminal clients I like weechat, but if you want a GUI experience then hexchat is good as well.

Tox sucks. Besides the security issues inherent in the design, it doesn't have any good implementations. There are a few alternatives here that work well. I personally perfer the 'ol upload to your FTP server and then send the link over IRC, or XMPP over IRC, but a lot of people want something more direct. XMPP, and most XMPP clients support this OOTB, and will also render images in the chat flow. For XMPP clients on GNU/Linux or BSD, Gaijim is a good.

For voice calls and rooms, Mumble works really well. There are hundreds of thousands of publically listed servers, and setting up your own takes a few seconds at the most.

I honestly see no reason for video chats, but Jitsi is well liked by many, and Jitsy meet (a FOSS jitsy server) is available.

All of the things I have mentioned can be configured with different levels of complexity to do good notificaitons. Some are more OOTB, like hexchat, Gaikim, etc. which will work with just about every DE. Notify-send what I use with custom scripts and my obscure window manager and it works well.

Conversations, a XMPP phone app works well and doesn't use much battery. Just about any IRC client you will download will work great and use no battery at all, plumble doesn't seem to hurt my battery life that much.

I never suggested you use FTP to send files, I do because it is easy and fun. I guess normalfags cant think about more than 1 thing at a time so go ahead and have fun on discord, I guess we don't want you in our sekret club anyways.

conversations is FOSS and you can build it yourself and make the default server whatever you want. The F-Droid version does not have this issue.

when say, you call someone in discord
it appears as a fucking huge box saying some is calling you, with a notification on mobile too
if im trying to call someone with your hackjob, nothing will appear, and ill have to specifically ping them to say "fucking uhh get in mumble lol" which is fun
and video is also a pain since I can't just click a button, no I need to open a browser, send a link and that'll probably work just fine on mobile too
