Can't you say that about any funeral, though? No funeral tells us anything about the person themselves from just looking at it. Every traditional one has a brown casket, formal black attire, etc. In that way, the deceased just becomes another guy who died. Just like how this funeral is just another guy who died, but oh he played Mario. You could say that making it Mario-themed is just reducing your son's funeral to a consumerism bash, but honestly burying a loved one with things they liked isn't exactly a strange concept, and whether or not that thing was a product to be sold doesn't matter because at the end of the day businessmen make a profit from anything, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy things that are sold. Finally, funerals are more of a thing for people to cope with someone's death, not for the dead person themselves, as he is now dead and can't care about things that the living do, so if this helps people to cope and remember him then the funeral fulfilled its purpose.
