Impulsive and poorly thought out attempts tend to utilize less lethal means (pills and booze, shitty nooses or cutting). Women are in general more emotional, so it's possible that fewer of them take the time necessary to thoroughly plan the suicide and procure an effective means of dying.
Basically women are quicker to reach a suicidal state and quicker to act on it so they spend less time preparing to die.
