I'm a convert, being a former Prot, so I had a very similar problem thought nowhere near as extreme as what your father must be like since I just absorbed the standard North-American anti-Catholic prejudice. For a long time I knew that Catholicism was certainly by any doctrinal standard Christian (and of course now I know it to be the true church) but for a long time it was just hard for me to associate it with Christianity, it felt like something 'different.' I'm pretty experienced with Catholic v. Protestant apologetics so I'm happy to answer any questions you might have. But, if it is more of just an emotional block then I would suggest just spending some time around Catholic groups, university clubs, church, ect.
Also on the topic of the troubles I feel like a bit of a house negro because despite being Catholic I am a lot more sympathetic to the loyalist side, largely because I'm a Canadian anglophile.
