the idea that you're born one gender hasn't made sense in philosophy since simone de beauvoir, at least for feminism. i guess that's kind of transphobic? it's an important question i think, and it's not transphobic because, obviously if no one is /born/ a certain gender, every gender is as valid. ok so, philosophers or cultural critics and feminists sought to prove all the ways in which gender and identitarian categories are at least unscientific; or to deconstruct how the sciences categorize things without showing that they're essentail -- as well as observing all the social proceeses and policing by which gender *norms* are enforced. does this mean that they're entirely constructed? no. but it, in a probably hegelian kind of way, seeks to show how norms are something that's creative (socially-constructed),and malleable, in order to prove that those people who have been somehow historically (+again with foucault, historically-specifically) discriminated against are not just social and natural anomalies who deserve it. largely because that's not true either.

also foucault shows how homosexuality used to be a medical condition, hysteria; and concludes that these conditions exist in *discourse* rather than in reality. like mental illnesses are social constructs because they're defined by things like the DSM, which are always changing; like they're part of a language, which of course changes a lot over time and doesn't have any claim to actual referentiality most of the time. for example, we refer to a tree, but we're really just referring to the thing that's there; the word "tree" or "arbre" in french has no necessary or intuitive relation to the thing that we call a tree; the image that we have of a tree will vary and is also scientifically and intellecturally constructed at least to an extent (there are different words for different things; not every language has the same concepts for things, thereby showing that they're not necessarily those things; not that they don't have any material or conceptual reality) (and why are some features of that tree considered essential to its treeness and others are not? that tree that grows from roots also has 88-leaves, why is its 88-leafness not an essential characteristic to its definition, but its rootness is?) and then, i forget where i was going. oh yea, discourse. we have to recognize the ways in which things like mental illnesses are constructed or socially-formed in order to do away with these illnesses that constitute barriers to socialness and also happiness, durr.

also freud in civilization and its discontents shows that mental illnesses are only mental illnesses in relation to how well the society as a whole can function at a given time and given the social circumstances that are contemporary to it. i think. so if homosexuality in victorian austria or wherever is contrary to social norms and social cohesion; or are seen this way; then, homosexuality is going to be considered a mental illness. and people will try to treat it. whereas, in a society that's learned to adapt to it, it isn't.

so, there's no such thing as mental illness, according to freud; only circumstances in which certain conditions (which do exist) are met with individuals who don't like mesh well with them.
